Two New FFG BRIDGE Projects: EAGLE and SmartGLSP

I am extremely happy to share that two of our research proposals have been selected for funding in the competitive FFG BRIDGE program: EAGLE and SmartGLSP.

The FFG BRIDGE program supports research at the intersection of academic research and industrial application, bringing universities and companies together to transfer research results toward practical use.

Receiving funding for two projects in the same BRIDGE funding round is a particularly exciting result for our team. Both projects will run for three years and explore how modern AI technologies can be combined with models and structured knowledge.

EAGLE – Enterprise Architecture Knowledge Graph for Learning and Exploration #

EAGLE investigates how Knowledge Graphs and Artificial Intelligence can advance Enterprise Architecture Management.

The project aims to develop a flexible Enterprise Architecture Knowledge Graph that integrates heterogeneous architecture information into a common semantic representation. Building on this foundation, we will investigate predictive analyses of enterprise architectures and conversational interfaces that allow stakeholders to explore complex architecture information using natural language.

EAGLE is coordinated by TU Wien and carried out together with our industry partner Dirigenta IT Solutions GmbH. At TU Wien, the project connects our research in enterprise modeling with expertise in knowledge graphs and artificial intelligence.

SmartGLSP – Facilitating Large Language Models for Smart GLSP-based Modeling #

SmartGLSP investigates how Large Language Models can enable a new generation of intelligent graphical modeling tools.

While AI assistants have already substantially changed text-based software development, comparable support for graphical modeling languages such as UML or BPMN is still at an early stage. SmartGLSP explores how LLMs can help users generate models from natural language, understand and navigate complex models, guide modeling activities, and recommend model improvements.

The project builds on the Graphical Language Server Platform (GLSP) and is coordinated by TU Wien together with our industry partner EclipseSource Services GmbH, one of the key organizations behind GLSP.

Connecting AI and Modeling #

Although EAGLE and SmartGLSP address different application areas, they share a research direction that is central to my current work: combining explicit models and structured knowledge with modern AI techniques.

EAGLE approaches this from the perspective of enterprise architectures and knowledge graphs, while SmartGLSP focuses on interactive modeling environments and Large Language Models.

I am very grateful to the Austrian Research Promotion Agency (FFG) for funding these projects and to Dirigenta and EclipseSource for embarking on these research collaborations with us.

Most importantly, I am excited about the opportunities these projects create for our team at TU Wien — three years of new research questions, prototypes, publications, and hopefully many interesting results lie ahead!
